Birthday brunch

Birthday brunch, the room to yourselves

A private birthday brunch here runs Saturday or Sunday, somewhere between the first Biryani Breakfast Bowl and the last of the coffee. We seat 32 at the table with 10 more at the bar, and the whole restaurant can be yours for the morning.

How the morning runs

Brunch service is 11:00 am to 3:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and a private party takes the room from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. That is long enough for people to arrive at their own pace, eat properly, and still be sitting down when the cake appears.

Under 32 guests, we set one long table. Past that, standing suits the room better — it holds 50 to 55 with hors d’oeuvres passed through it — and a full buyout hands you the bar as well.

Brunch is the service where a large group is easier than a small one. The kitchen is already sending food out in waves, so nobody minds if half the party turns up at noon and the other half was here at eleven.

What lands on the table

The dishes people ask for at brunch are the Biryani Breakfast Bowl, the Splendid Short Ribs Benedict, and the Bombay Berry French Toast. They come out alongside the cooking the kitchen is known for. Starters come out to share and mains are plated for each guest, so nobody waits on a serving dish.

Vegetarian dishes are marked (v) on the menu, and (n) flags nuts. Tell us about any allergy when you book and the kitchen works around it — the allergy menu lists every dish and what it carries.

Your name on the menu

The birthday name goes in script across the top of every menu on the table, with the morning’s dishes printed beneath it. It costs nothing, and it is usually photographed before the food is.

Cake, candles, and the sweet course

Bring the birthday cake and we’ll plate it at $6 a guest, candles included. If you would rather leave dessert to us, the Gajar Halwa à la Mode is our Dadi’s recipe, fourth-generation Sindhi: warm carrot halwa under pistachio shavings and vanilla ice cream.

Mimosas and mango lassis go round the table, and nobody here will raise an eyebrow at an Indian Spiced Old Fashioned before noon.

When you write to us, the useful things to include are the date, roughly how many of you there are, whether you want the table seated or the room standing, and whether a cake is arriving. That is enough for us to come back with a menu and a plan for the morning.

Questions, answered

Can we book the whole restaurant for a birthday brunch? +
Yes — weekend brunch buyouts are among the things we do most. The room seats 32 with 10 more at the bar or holds 50 to 55 standing. Send the date and guest count through the planning form.
What time does a private brunch start and finish? +
A private brunch runs 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. Brunch service itself opens at 11:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, which gives the kitchen half an hour to turn the room over to you.
Can we bring a birthday cake? +
Yes. Bring the cake and we’ll plate it at $6 a guest, candles and all.
How far ahead should we book a birthday brunch? +
About a month if you want the whole room to yourself, and one to two weeks for a smaller group. Weekend brunch fills with regular reservations, and once those are on the books we can’t clear them.
