Finding us

Visit us

Where is The Drunken Munkey located? +
The Drunken Munkey is at 338 East 92nd Street, between First and Second Avenues on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, New York, NY 10128.
What are your hours? +
We’re open Monday to Thursday 4:00 pm–12:00 am, Friday 4:00 pm–1:00 am, Saturday 11:00 am–1:00 am, and Sunday 11:00 am–12:00 am. The kitchen closes one hour before we close.
What’s the closest subway? +
The Q at 96th Street–Second Avenue is about a five-minute walk; its 94th Street entrance is the closest one to us. The 6 at 96th and Lexington is roughly ten minutes.
Is there parking nearby? +
Metered street parking is easier to find on First Avenue than on Second, and you can pay the meter through ParkNYC. For a garage, ParkWhiz will show you what’s nearby and let you reserve a spot before you set out.
Is the restaurant wheelchair accessible? +
Yes, the restaurant is wheelchair accessible. Mention it when you book and we’ll hold a table that’s easy to get to.
Do you have outdoor seating? +
Yes, and you can choose outdoor seating when you book on Resy. It depends on the weather, of course; if the evening turns we’ll find you a table inside.
Is there a dress code? +
Dress as you like, with a few exceptions: team jerseys and sports headwear, gym clothes, sleeveless shirts, sweatpants, and slides or flip-flops are too casual for the dining room. The room is part of the meal here, and our team turns out for it too. If you’re coming from the gym or the game, change first.
Are kids welcome? +
Children are welcome, and we have high chairs — note it in your reservation and one will be waiting. Do count the children in your headcount: if six of you are coming, book for six, small ones included. Our tables don’t stretch, and arriving a seat short is nobody’s idea of a good evening. Weekend brunch is the easiest time to bring them; by evening the room is candlelit and grown-up.
What are the movies playing in the dining room? +
Old-school movies, always with the sound off. It doesn’t get more Old Bombay than that. A silent film also makes an excellent dinner guest: it never interrupts, and nobody has to agree on the plot.
Is The Drunken Munkey good for date night? +
Yes, it’s excellent for date night. The dining room is candlelit and built for a long dinner, so ask for Table 2 when you book. Note the occasion on your reservation and we’ll make it special.
What’s the best way to reach you? +
For a table, book online through Resy. For parties of nine or more, email KingKong@drunkenmunkey.com; for events and catering, Events@drunkenmunkey.com. For anything else, use the note form on our contact page, or call (646) 846-8986.
From the kitchen

Food & dietary

What kind of Indian food do you serve? +
Bombay café cooking: small plates, tandoor grills, proper curries and biryanis. These are family recipes, rooted in the kitchens of Old Bombay and the Indian Army messes and gymkhanas of pre-Partition India.
Is The Drunken Munkey halal? +
Our chicken and lamb are halal. The menu now also includes pork dishes — notably our Goan Pork Vindaloo — so the kitchen is not fully halal. If you keep strict halal, tell your server and we’ll guide you through the menu; there are also plenty of vegetarian dishes.
Do you serve pork? +
Yes — pork is on the menu, most notably the ‘Portu-Goan’ Pork Vindaloo, braised in chilli, vinegar and tomato to the original recipe. Our chicken and lamb are halal, but the pork means the kitchen is not.
Do you serve beef? +
Yes. Beef short rib is on the menu, slow-braised in the Churchgate Short-Rib Pao and again in the Short-Rib Eggs Benedict at weekend brunch.
How spicy is the food? Can dishes be made milder or hotter? +
Most dishes can be made milder or hotter to taste — just tell your server how you like it. The ‘Portu-Goan’ Pork Vindaloo is the heat-seeker’s dish. The butter chicken and the korma sit at the gentler end.
Do you have vegetarian options? +
Plenty. Vegetarian dishes are marked (v) on the menu and (n) flags nuts. An allergy menu is available on request.
Do you have vegan options? +
Yes, and quite a few: the Crispy Okra Chips, Vegetable Samosas, Paani Puri, ‘Chholley’ Chana Masala, Vegetable Biryani, Gunpowder Potatoes, Roasted ‘Gobi’ Cauliflower, Faansi Green Beans and Saffron Basmati Rice are all vegan as they come. The Fresh Chopped Mango Salad and Cashew Lemon Rice are vegan without the cashews. Ghee and cream turn up in a lot of Indian cooking, so tell your server before you order — our allergy menu lists every dish.
Do you have gluten-free options? +
Plenty of dishes carry no gluten — the Butter Chicken Tikka Masala, Kashmiri Saffron Lamb, Railway Chicken, the Pork Vindaloo, Chana Masala and the rice dishes among them. The breads are the exception, so ask for your biryani without the naan or with it on the side. Our allergy menu lists every dish.
Do you have an allergy menu? +
Yes — ask your server for a copy at the table, or read the full allergy menu here, dish by dish. Nuts are flagged (n) on the food menu and vegetarian dishes (v), but tell us about any allergy before you order and the kitchen will work around it.
What should I order on a first visit? +
The Butter Chicken Tikka Masala, the Crispy Okra Chips and a Munkey House Paanch. The okra arrives room temperature and crisp, which catches most people off guard.
What is butter chicken tikka masala? +
Butter chicken tikka masala is tandoor-fired chicken tikka folded into a slow-simmered creamed tomato sauce, the one North Indian kitchens call maakhni. Ours comes with saffron basmati rice and butter naan.
Do you serve dessert? +
Yes — half a dozen, and the one to order is the Gajar Halwa à la Mode: our Dadi’s recipe, fourth-generation Sindhi, warm carrot halwa under pistachio shavings and vanilla ice cream. The Dark Chocolate Cricket Ball is a warm rum-infused cake with crème anglaise and berry glaze, about as subtle as its name. Every dessert is on our allergy menu with what it carries.
Behind the bar

Drinks & the bar

What cocktails are you known for? +
The Munkey House Paanch and the Indian Spiced Old Fashioned. ‘Punch’ comes from paanch, the Hindi word for five, after the five ingredients in the original. Ours is poured by the glass, or in a bowl that serves twelve.
Is there a Happy Hour? +
Yes — Happy Hour runs every day, 4:00–6:00 pm, with five select cocktails.
Can I sit at the bar and eat? +
Yes — there are ten seats at the bar, the full menu is served there, and you can pick a bar seat when you book. You sit right up against the bottles, close enough to watch your drink being built.
Do you have non-alcoholic drinks? +
Yes — zero-proof cocktails, lassis and fresh coconut water. Tell the bartender what you like and they’ll build you something proper.
Can I bring my own wine? +
Yes. Corkage is $30 per bottle, for wines that aren’t on our list or that come from your own collection. Let us know in advance and we’ll have the right glasses on the table.
Do you show cricket or sports? +
Yes — we screen major cricket events. A big match takes over the whole room, which is closer to a gymkhana clubhouse than a restaurant, so book a table if you want a seat for one. Other major sporting events play with the sound off, unless a New York team is making history.
Weekends

Brunch

Do you serve weekend brunch? +
Yes — weekend brunch is served Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 am–3:30 pm. Standout dishes include the Breakfast Biryani, Short-Rib Eggs Benedict, and French Toast.
Do you serve brunch during the week? +
No — brunch is Saturday and Sunday only, 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. Monday through Friday we open at 4:00 pm.
Can I book a table for brunch? +
Yes — brunch tables are booked the same way as dinner, online through Resy. Walk-ins are welcome when there’s a table free, though weekends are our busiest service.
Booking

Reservations & groups

Do you take reservations? +
Yes. You can reserve a table online, and for parties of nine or more email KingKong@drunkenmunkey.com.
Do you take walk-ins? +
Yes — walk-ins are welcome whenever we have a table free. Weekend evenings and Happy Hour are the busiest stretches, so a reservation is the surer bet.
How far ahead should I book for a weekend? +
Book Friday and Saturday nights as far ahead as you can; those tables go first. Our website and Resy always carry the most current availability, so if your date isn’t showing, join the notify list and we’ll be in touch when a table opens. For a special occasion, email KingKong@drunkenmunkey.com and mention it — we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
How do I book for a large group? +
For nine or more, email KingKong@drunkenmunkey.com and we’ll arrange it. Parties of eight or fewer can book online like any other table.
Can I bring a celebration cake? +
Yes — celebration cakes are welcome, with a plating fee of $6 per person. Tell us when you book so the kitchen has plates and candles standing by.
Gather with us

Private events & catering

Can I host a private event or order catering? +
Yes. Host a dinner at the restaurant, or have us cater at your home or office. Email Events@drunkenmunkey.com to plan.
What is your private event capacity? +
We seat up to 32 for a private dinner, plus another 10 at the bar. For a standing reception with passed hors d’oeuvres we take 50 to 55.
Can we buy out the whole restaurant? +
Yes, full buyouts are available. Every event gets a personalized printed menu, so your guests sit down to something with the occasion on it.
Do you offer off-site catering? +
Yes — we cater at your home or your office, for 15 to 50 people, with three days’ notice. Email Events@drunkenmunkey.com with the date, the guest count and where you are, and we’ll build a menu around it.
How far ahead should I book a private event? +
About a month ahead for anything sizeable. Regular reservations fill the room as the date gets closer, and once they’re on the books we can’t clear them out to make space for a party.
How do I start planning an event? +
Email Events@drunkenmunkey.com with your date, your guest count and the kind of evening you have in mind — a team dinner, a wedding rehearsal, a milestone birthday. We’ll come back with a menu and a plan for the room.

The Munkey Meal

What is the Munkey Meal? +
Every night from 10 pm we serve a hot meal to anyone in need — vegetarian or non-vegetarian, just ask the host. Guests can pay it forward by sponsoring a meal for $7.
How do I sponsor a Munkey Meal? +
Sponsor one online for $7 and we’ll serve it that night. Every visit keeps the practice going, sponsored or not.
How many Munkey Meals have you served? +
Over 20,000 meals since 2020. We started it in the worst of that year and have kept it up every night since.
